The rail industry abides by a number of powder coating British standards to ensure that maximum safety and reliability are met. As a railway powder coating supplier in the UK, we strive to exceed these standards to sustain our prestige in the industry. We do this by obtaining matchless metal finishing specifications. But, what are these standards, and how exactly do we meet their requirements?

As with any sector, quality and safety are of utmost importance to ensure seamless performance and ultimate longevity. Here at R&M Powder Coating, we commit ourselves to providing the highest level of quality in our rail industry powder coating services. Through decades in our field, our team has been dedicated and knowledgeable on best practices, making our results incomparable.

What fire safety railway standards exist?

R&M Industries provides impeccable powder coating methods that comply with railway standards. More specifically, BS 6853 that focuses on such issues as smoke emissions, and BS 476 for fire propagation and surface spread of flames. By upholding this level of safety, we can give our clients peace of mind always.

All businesses found in the railway industry will need to provide evidence that all machinery and equipment abide by current safety regulations. Not to mention, they will require continuous checks on fire safety. So, when utilising our powder coating at British standard, we can ensure that all applications pass these compliances. Therefore, giving businesses the opportunity for smooth operations.

Railway Fire Safety Standards

Railway Standard BS 6853

What is the railway standard BS 6853? Metal finishing specifications should always be standardised to the primary railway safety standards. BS 6853 covers the safety of all passengers in the event of a fire. This could have been initiated either on board or in close proximity to the train itself, as well as vehicles comprising said train.

There are up to 50 tests that vehicles will undergo to meet these standards. For instance, these include the surface spread of a flame, smoke density on the floor, emissions and critical radiant flux at extinguishment.

Railway Standard BS 476

The powder coating British standard mainly correlates to railway standard BS 476. These regulatory factors focus on fire tests on structures and building materials. As for a train, this could include upholstery and metal racking. Moreover, this test is split into parts 6 and 7 to certify all areas.

Part 6 measures the contribution to the development of a fire that was created by an essentially flat material, assembly or composite. Whereas Part 7 measures the lateral spread of a flame travelling along the surface of a test specimen.
